Friends of St Mary’s 2019 Flower Festival and Village Hall Refreshments

We wish to begin this report by offering a heartfelt “Thank You” to everybody who assisted in any way to enable the Flower Festival to take place and to everybody who prepared refreshments, baked cakes and helped at the Village Hall. A special mention must be made of the men and women who erected and dismantled the gazebos and carted chairs, tables and books in the extreme heat. Without your assistance we could not have coped! We must mention the flower arrangers. Their imaginative interpretations of the theme, “Our Glorious Saints, inspired many compliments to be written in the Visitors Book which can be seen in the church. Our thanks also to our generous sponsors of the flower arrangements. To single one person out, our thanks to Elspeth Tranter for organising the Flower Festival for the first time, recruiting helpers and organising the craft stalls on the Village Hall green.

In contrast to many previous Bank Holidays the weather was very hot, humid and dry but those helping in the churchyard, including Jean Kemp with her plant sale, were able to shelter from the sun under gazebos. Probably because of the weather we felt the number of visitors was lower than previous years but overall the income they raised was a little higher than last year.
The income from the Flower Festival totalled £1,648.04. This included the Grand Draw, Books & Bric-a-Brac, Plant Sale, Match the Friend to the Baby photos, Mabel and Albert’s Holiday Destination, Teddies and Cards, Treasure Map, Sweets in a Jar and Weight of the Cake, plus donations and Stallholders fees. The sale of Refreshments and cakes in the Village Hall run by the PCC did extremely well raising a total of £1,027.40. Thus, the Grand total from all activities has raised £2,675.44. Thank you to all who visited and helped achieve this wonderful total.
The winners of prizes in the Grand Draw were: June Redford, Tim Holder, Josie Fisk, Terri Gray, John Dale, Mary Whatling, Clive Groom, Rebecca Earl, Madeleine Woodward, Caroline Harris, Diane Richards and Ron Fryer. Sweets in the Jar - Levi Smith. Weight of the cake - Susza Dickson. Treasure Map - child: William Abbott, adult: Mr. Sadler. Mabel and Albert’s Holiday Destination - Gary Avis. Match the Friend to the Baby Photos - Janet Theobald. Again, a big Thank You to everyone who helped us achieve such a marvelous total. Peter Neale, Acting Chairman, Friends of St Mary’s, Gislingham (now retired) Ann Cottee, Church Warden, St Mary’s, Gislingham
I would like to express my thanks to all the very generous sponsors for all the money they so kindly donated, which helps to keep the flower festival going, and not forgetting all the people who volunteered their help, and all the visitors who took the time out to come and see us. If you are an enthusiastic flower arranger and would like to join us for next year, or if you would like to give some free time volunteering please contact me on 07473 131841. Looking forward to next year for another successful Flower Festival. Elspeth Tranter
